In 1941
after a request from the local progress association Wavell Heights was the name
chosen for the area once known as West Nundah.
Wavell Heights is 10 kilometres north of central Brisbane. It is located
west of Sandgate Road and East of Gympie Road.
Its northern border is along Downfall Creek to the southern border along
Kedron Brook.
In 1942,
the Wavell Heights Progress Association asked for a school in their
district. A number of sites were
suggested with the final location, a block of land bordered by Minore,
Burradoo and Kuran Streets in Wavell Heights, was decided on in 1947.
In 1947
the Department of Public Works purchased a military building from Redbank and
re-erected it as a temporary school building (below).
This building was divided into 6 classrooms with alterations made to
provide reasonable lighting and ventilation.
Wavell
Heights State School was opened on 27 January 1948 with Mr George Hull as Head
Teacher with 113 students. The
initial school building was sold and removed in 1955 as the school expanded and
further school buildings were erected, starting with the building below left and middle.
During the 1950s and 1960s the school experienced rapid growth to have
almost 900 students at its largest. From the
1970s to the 1990s the school gradually declined to around 200 students.
In 1974, the Wavell Heights preschool centre
opened (below right), which now houses our Prep classes.
In 2011, the school experienced a fire that consumed classroom
blocks. The school acquired a new
teaching block, which hosts our year 5 and 6 as well as the music and
art/Japanese room. At the same time, the
school built an administration block with library as part of the Building the
Education Revolution funded by the federal government.
During 2017 the school refurbished the court area so that students can play either basketball or netball throughout the year. The school took the opportunity to upgrade the playground for the students and installed synthetic grass to complete the area. The school is continually looking for ways to enhance the school grounds for the students and school community.
